OUTREACH PROGRAM

BJCC's Outreach Progragm enables isolated older adults and others to become aware of the services available through BJCC and elsewhere in the community that can improve health, safety, and quality of life.

Outreach is done in two primary ways:

1. BJCC's Outreach Coordinator teams with representatives from local police precincts, The Department for the Aging, Visiting Nurse Service, EPIC Prescription Drug Coverage, and others to provide workshops in the community rooms, lobbies, and laudry rooms of Bronx apartment buildings.  Participants are able to ask questions, connect with a BJCC social worker, and learn about community resources, health, safety, emergency preparedness, and benefits and entitlements.

2. Signs and symptoms of depression are often undetected or overlooked.  BJCC's Geriatric Mental Health Initiative has partnered with the Department of Geriatric Psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center and provides outreach seminars in the community to educate on signs and symptoms of depression as well as anxiety and alchohol abuse.  The Program Coordinator works closely with social workers, RN's, informal gatekeepers, and other service providers to indentify seniors, age 60 and up, who might benefit from the program.

NORC SUPPORTIVE SERVICES PROGRAMS

What is a NORC Supportive Services Program

A Naturally Occurring Retirement Community or NORC exists when a high concentration of older adults are aging in place.  NORCs that employ an innovative model for social and health service provision are deemed "NORC Supportive Service Programs."  This model brings together a social service partner, a housing partner, a health partner, and residents to enable seniors to continue living full, dignified, happy, and healthy lives in the comfort of their own homes.  NORC SSPs nurture every element of a person's life, providing residents with case management, benefits and entitlements assistance, health monitoring and education services, as well as social, recreational, community, and educational programming.

BJCC's NORC Supportive Services Programs

Bronx Jewish Community Council currently operates two NORC Supportive Services Programs in the borough, one located at the Amalgamated/Park Reservoir Co-ops, the other located in NYCHA's Pelham Parkway Houses.  In addition, BJCC is an active partner in a third NORC program, the Parkchester Enhancement Program for Seniors.

SUBSIDIARIES

West Bronx Housing and Neighborhood Resource Center (WBHNRC)

As the BJCC subsidiary charged with providing housing-related services, WBHNRC promotes and stimulates housing preservation, neighborhood stabilization, and reinvestment in the west Bronx, offering in-depth technical assistance and information to owners and tenants alike.  Staff members have a thorough understanding of New York City housing regulations, the legal rights and responsibilities of both tenants and owners, and take into consideration the concerns of each.  Services provided enable residents of the west Bronx to obtain and maintain safe, affordable housing.

Home Attendant Services

BJCC understand that many prefer to remain at home as they age.  For some, a little extra help is needed to enable them to do so.  BJCC's Home Attendant Services Program provides this extra help to Medicaid recipients.  Our hundreds of home attendants are carefully trained to be skilled at caring for clients, fully attentive to clients needs, and respectful of the responsibility fo being in the client's home.
